UNDERGROUND POWER CABLE FAILURE

UNDERGROUND POWER CABLE FAILURE

How Do Cables Fail?

Each year, millions of people and thousands of businesses are impacted by underground cable system failures. IMCORP is dedicated to advancing the understanding of how these failures occur and more importantly, how they may be avoided.

IMCORP’s Factory Grade® technology is the only method capable of locating all these defect types and providing results comparable to the manufacturers’ standards.

IMCORP enables clients to improve cable system reliability through asset life cycle management services including commissioning, maintenance, and retirement.

Avoiding cable system failures begins with understanding how cable failures occur.

Since the 1960’s, cable and accessory manufacturers have relied on offline 50/60Hz Partial Discharge testing as the key indicator of future performance. Below are the official manufacturers’ standards that the IMCORP Factory Grade® test follows.

IMCORP FACTS

For over 40 years, cable and accessory manufacturers have used offline 50/60 Hz PD testing with specific pC sensitivity levels as a quality control standard

Based on 30K+ initial commission tests, approximately 4% of splices, 4% of termination & 1% of cables do not meet manufacturers’ performance standards

Over 99% of solid dielectric cable system failures are associated with Partial Discharge

IMCORP has worked with hundreds of clients in 49 U.S. states and 16 countries

IMCORP has helped clients avoid over 38,000 potential power outages

IMCORP has assisted over 80 utilities around the world manage underground cable assets

IMCORP has ensured the reliability of collector system cables and accessories at over 400 renewable energy sites
